MICK WILCOCKSON TRAINING DAYS

Scarborough had a top level 4 coach come to help the local children with their table tennis skills.  Mick Wilcockson came to Scarborough and showed some of the local table tennis league children what they would need to become a top international table tennis player. The day was a great success and we are hoping to put some more on in the future.

RUTH IS THE TOPS

Ryedale's top woman player Ruth Purseglove has won the title of ETTA Female Coach of the Year. The Helmsley coach beat off competition from all over the country to win this prestigious award which recognises her immense dedication to coaching young and old table tennis players in Ryedale.

ROTHERHAM SCORPIONS

Rotherham Scorpions came to Scarborough for their annual friendly against the Scarborough youngsters.  Despite the weather (Thunder lightening and torrential rain) and light fittings falling down in the centre (maybe due to the thunder) a very enjoyable day was had by all.  We look forward to the next one.

WILKINSON STORE HELPS YOUNGSTERS

Wilkinson Stores Scarborough has given Scarborough Table Tennis Premier youngsters a large boost they donated £200 to them to help with their training.  This will mean that we are on target to buy that much needed robot machine.

PRESENTATION EVENING

Despite a late presentation evening this year a very enjoyable and smooth running event took place thanks to the Premier Club who helped the struggling LMC by taking it on this year especially Elaine and Carole who took over at the last minute.   The trophies were presented by Mark Willerton ETTA Regional Development officer.  The superb food was by alfresco caterers Peasholm and the entertainment was by the very talented Chris Locke Entertainment.  The trophies were as follows

NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE AT BILLINGHAM

FIRST ROUND SUCCESS FOR SCARBOROUGH TEAMS.

Scarborough table tennis fielded 4 young teams in the first round of the National Cadet league in Billingham this year.   This was the first time all 4 teams went to the same place.  Both the Scarborough A team and B team won all of their 4 matches with some very impressive play from all 6 team members.   Although Scarborough C and D teams didn’t manage to win all of their matches they didn’t do it without a fight with many of their games going to 5 sets, for most of these young players it was the first time in this sort of league so look out for them in the future.  This was a superb start to what promises to be a very interesting National Cadet League for the Scarborough players this year.

Junior Boys
Fambeley retained his title as expected beating Thomas Harrington in the Final 11-9  11-9  11-7.

The Consolation Plate for the players who were not group winners saw some exciting table tennis.  In the first semi final Conor Skelton +14 always had the edge over Chris Murfin and won 31+27.  In the other semi final Gareth Olney -2 pulled back the deficit against Thomas Harrington +11 but serving at 29-30 dropped the ball much to the surprise of the large number of spectator watching the match.

SCARBOROUGH JUNIOR CLOSED

There were some tired legs at the end of the Junior Closed event which saw over 12 hours of non-stop table tennis with some Finals reduced to thee sets.
Early events went to the fancied players but as the day progressed there were  a number of surprise results.

The Under 11 Boys Singles saw a Final between the two most promising youngsters seen in Scarborough in recent years.
McCauley Youngson opened against Keegan Barstow in confident mood and serving well and playing excellent table tennis took the first two sets 11-6  11-6.  For some reason he then went on the defensive and let Barstow back into the game. The latter took the next two sets 11- 4  11- 2 and the decider turned into a pushing competition which Barstow took 11-8.   Beaten semi finalist were Jordan Ireland and Ben Dunn.

The Under 11 Girls saw Rhianna Wood prove too steady for Katie Lee winning 11-7  11-6  11-6.  Beaten semi finalist were Chloe Larner and Yuika Crawford.

The Under 11 Doubles saw the Boys and Girls winners in action again with Barstow and Youngson beating Wood and Lee 12- 10  11-7  11-4.  Beaten semi finalist were Ben Dunn and Matthew Whilde and Jordan Ireland and Billy Gracie.

The Under 13 Boys proved very competitive.  Mark Frazer and Thomas Harrington, the two tops seeds, battled out the Final.  Frazer easily took the opener 11-2 but Harrington came back to level 14-12. In the third set Harrington had an  match point to go 2-1 up but missed an easy shot to go behind and never recovered in the fourth set losing 11-1.
Beaten semi finalists were Barstow and Youngson.

The Under 13 Girls Final saw old rivals Jessica West and Alex Lee clash.  Both girls have worked hard at their game this season. In an entertaining Final Lee took the opener 12-10, West levelled 11-9  but Lee took the next two sets 11-6  11-9.  The match centred around which player could get in first with their backhand and Lee  had the edge.
Beaten semi finalists were Jennifer and Rhianna Wood.

In the Under !3 Doubles Thomas Harrington and Connor Skelton got home in fives sets against Mark Frazer and Ben Atkinson.   In an entertaining match in which it was impossible to predict the winner Harrington and Skelton won 11-9 in the decider
Beaten semi finalist were Alex Lee and Jessica West and Keegan Barstow and McCauley Youngson.

The Cadet Boys singles was the most competitive event of the day and saw Thomas Harrington make up for his earlier defeat in the Under 13 Final - he seems to play better with a few games under his belt.  In the Final he beat David Revell 11-5  11-6  12.10.   Beaten semi finalist were Mark Frazer and Callum Feather.

The Cadet Girls Singles Final saw an excellent display of attacking table tennis from Rebecca George who has just celebrated her new National ranking of 26 in the country and old opponent Gemma Deeley. In normal league play George would be expected to beat Deeley and took the opening set 11-9.   The second set stood at 10 all and if George had gone on to take the set the match may well have been all over. However, Deeley won 14-12 and playing increasingly confident table tennis won two very close sets 14-12  11-9.   Every credit to both girls for a high entertaining and sporting final.   Beaten semi finalist were Jessica West and Alex Lee.

There was then a surprise in the Cadet Doubles when Callum Feather and James Hodgson beat George and Deeley 11-6  11-9.   This was just reward for Hodgson in particular who had played fine attacking table tennis all day.   Beaten semi finalists were just Dyll and David Revell and Jordan Ireland and Dren Nellis.

The Junior Boys title went to Alex Barker who beat Ben Kay 11-6  11-8  12 -10 in the Final. Both players served up a fine display of table tennis but Barker's block proved very effective in moving his opponents around the table to give him the edge.
Beaten semi finalists were James Hodgson and Kevin Gambles.

The Junior Girls Final saw George and Deeley clash again and again it was Deeley who came out on top.  Deeley seemed to know it was her day and confidently strolled to an 11-7 11-7 victory.  Beaten semi finalist were again West and Alex Lee.

Callum Feather and James Hodgson proved that playing together as a pair in doubles is vital by also taking the Junior Doubles.  In the Final they beat Alex Barker and Alex Lee 11-8  11-8.   Beaten semi finalist were Ben Kay and Gemma Deeley and Kevin Gambles and Stuart Chadwick.

The Under 19 Singles saw Barker and Kay in action again.  Barker took the opening two sets 11-8 11-8  but in the third Kay altered his service and went 10-6 up.  However, barker came back and took the set and title 11-9.    Again this was a first rate display from two top junior players.   Beaten semi finalists were Rebecca George and Callum Feather.

In the Under 19 event open to all age ranges Kevin Gambles was rewarded for his efforts throughout the day when he took the trophy from a +17 handicap to beat Alex Barker, Scratch,  31-25.   Gambles made uses of his big start to attack at every opportunity and his tactics paid off.   Beaten semi finalists were Mark Frazer and Jan Dyll.

The junior champions can now rest until the end of the month when they will get the opportunity to challenge the seniors in the Senior Closed event.

NATIONAL PREMIER CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD

It was announced by the English Table Tennis Association at a presentation at Lilleshall at the weekend that Scarborough has been awarded the accolade of National Premier Table Tennis Club of the Year at advanced level.  This follows being voted the top Premier Club in Yorkshire.

All Premier Clubs in the country at advanced level were considered for the award and Clubs were allocated points for the range of work they had undertaken and the results they had achieved.

Scarborough is now one of the largest table tennis Leagues in Yorkshire and although the standard of play of the adults lags behind the standard set by their counterparts in the large cities - mainly because so many promising juniors leave town when they reach their late teens - the Scarborough junior players have competed with great success all over the country.

The Premier Club has fielded 8 teams in the Yorkshire League and 4 teams in the National Cadet League playing fixtures in Middlesborough, Rotherham, Grimsby, Hull and Halifax.
Note was taken of the high number of volunteers who give their time to run the Premier Club and provide transport for the Premier Club teams.

It was noted that every effort was made to promote table tennis as a family sport with parents welcome to use the viewing area at the Centre. Tables have always been set aside for use by the general public.
A plus mark was the large number of girls playing table tennis both in the League and in local schools.

There are now 10 Divisions in the League including 4 junior Divisions with towards 300 senior and juniors involved in match play or coaching every week.   The Scarborough Table Tennis Centre at Graham School is full most week day evenings and is the hub of local table tennis.
An Elite Squad of 24 junior players has been set up and they have competed all over the country - recently 8 players competed in Bristol for an event for the top 32 players in the country at different age ranges. The Squad has met with considerable success with 12 players now holding a national ranking.

It was noted that the Centre has been used as a base for a number of courses including coaches courses for both senior and junior players, and for players with disabilities.
The Centre was used to stage the North Yorkshire Closed and is used by various organisation to stage table tennis events.

Of major importance was the fact that there is a network of coaching in local schools involving breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs with table tennis on the curriculum in some schools. Gladstone Road and Barrowcliff Schools also provide evening coaching facilities and act as  satellite support venues to the Centre.
Local schools, under the guidance of the Premier Club, have met with great success in both team and individual events in the English Schools Championships with matches played in Middlesborough, Blackburn and Bradford. Four Scarborough Schools were North Yorkshire champions and 3 were runners up in the Regional Finals.

Having been given the Clubmark Award status was regarded as essential. It was noted that Child Protection policy had been in place for four years with a Child Welfare Officer in post.   Strong links have also been set up with the ETTA and YTTA via the Regional Development Officer and with the Scarborough Borough Council and the North Yorkshire County Council.

Particular mention was made of the extensive press coverage given to table tennis by the Scarborough Evening News.

The Club will now set up plans for he Award to be made in Scarborough.

The English Table Tennis Association has  nominated the Scarborough Premier Table Tennis Club for the Top Sports Club of the Year award promoted by the Foundation for Sport and the Arts with  £6,OOO going to the winner.

DISAPPOINTING SEASON END FOR SCARBOROUGH JUNIORS

Scarborough Elite table tennis squad had a busy weekend with two teams playing in Grimsby, 2 playing in Middlesborough and a fifth at the Centre in Scarborough.
Results were generally disappointing although local teams were playing the top teams in their Divisions and some players were unavailable.

The most disappointing result was in Scarborough  where the Scarborough Juniors had to beat local rival York to finish runners up in Division 1 of the Yorkshire League.   With Rebecca George playing for the Cadets in Grimsby Adam Ciotowski came into the team but when Ben Kay made himself unavailable at the last moment it was too late to bring in a register player. Ben Atkinson stepped in and played well to take one of his singles to add to the three won by Alex Barker and one by Ciotowski.  This gave Scarborough a 5-4 win but as Atkinson was not a registered Yorkshire League player the Yorkshire Table Tennis Association awarded his game to York to give them a 5-4 win and the runners up place.

In the National Cadet League in Grimsby Scarborough A played the top two teams - Pudsey and Sheffield.. They crashed 9-1 to Pudsey with Rebecca George picking up the only win and Thomas Harrington and Stuart Chadwick drawing a blank.  They did better against Sheffield A going down 5-4.  George picked up her three singles and Harrington fought hard to win one. Chadwick was again without a win but this did not reflect the effort he put in.
The Scarborough B team played just one match in Grimsby beating Bradford 9-O.  Although the Scarborough trio of Jessica West, Alex Lee and Jennifer Wood took all their singles they had to fight hard and showed a great deal of determination to stay unbeaten.  Alex Lee in particular frequently had to come from a set down. Jennifer Wood again underlined her potential showing form well above her normal
league play.

In Middlesborough the Scarborough National Cadet League teams found themselves playing the top teams
The A team of David Revell, James Hodgson and Conor Skelton went down 5-4 to table toppers Ormsbey A which was not a bad performance. Skleton won two of his singles with the others winning one each.
The A team the clashed with the Scarborough B team scraping home 5-4.  Revell was unbeaten with two wins from Hodgson and Skelton not able to contribute. For the B team Gemma Deeley won two and Keegan Barstow and McCauley Youngson one each.
In their final match the A team went down 7-2 to Northfield A with Hodgson and Skelton each winning one.

In their other two games the B team went down 6-3 to Northfield with Barstow winning two and Deeley one and against Ormsbey they lost 5-4 with two wins from Deeley and one each for Barstow and Youngson.

There could be little argument that on the day the B team were more impressive than their older counterparts.

These fixtures see the end of games in the Yorkshire and National cadet League.   Scarborough A and B both finished runners up in the Yorkshire League Division 1 and 2 and the Juniors could count themselves unlucky to only finish 3rd in their Division.
In their first venture in the National League Scarborough's four teams have acquitted themselves well.  All the teams have finished in prominent positions in their Division and by the end of March 12 players will achieved England rankings - Rebecca George and Keegan Barstow in the top 5O.

GIRLS ENJOY MAJOR SUCCESS IN MIDLANDS EVENT

Scarborough girls enjoyed great success in the Grantham 1* event at the weekend with Gemma Deeley winning the Junior Girls title and Rebecca George taking the Cadet Girls title - with the added bonus of the two Scarborough girls fighting out the Final of the Junior event.

Gemma Deeley gained a careers best result when she beat team mate Rebecca George to win an all Scarborough final to take the Junior Girls title at Grantham.
Adopting a much more controlled game than usual she abandoned her usual all out attacking game and produced some excellent attacking play from behind a surprisingly well controlled defence.     In the Final she showed admiral control particular after Rebecca had taken the first set 11-7.   Controlled attacking gave Gemma the second set 11-7 and she took an 8-4 lead in he second only for Rebecca's blocking game to bring her back into the game at 8-7.  However Gemma, troubling Rebecca with her service, ran out an 11-8 winner.  Full of confidence now Gemma took the fourth set 11-8 for a rare victory over her colleague - but one which was well deserved.    Rebecca only dropped one set to reach the Final and had just won a place in the Cadet Final so had already played a lot of table tennis - but this was Gemma's day.

In fact the Cadet Girls Event proved even more competitive he the Junior Event. Deeley,George and Jessica West all qualified from their initial groups.  Jessica West, in particular, did well to win a very competitive group which included top 50 ranked player Shazmina Yasmin from London.  Ranked no 1 George had an easy passage but Deeley also had to play well to qualify having to beat highly ranked Sally Hoang who later reached the Junior Girls Final.

In the next knock out Round Deeley went out to Jade Risby - another ranked player - from Kent in five set but the other two girls made the 1/4 Finals.  George had an easy passage but West did particularly well to beat South Yorkshires Kirsty Owen, ranked 40 in England, for the first time, in five sets.  In the Semi Finals West had no answered to the speed of Sally Hoang paying the price for her weak serving. Hoan won 11-3  8-11  11-8  11-8.   George was made to struggle against Hanna Winfield  from Lincoln ranked 10 placed behind her in the ETTA rankings but went through in four sets.

In the Cadets Final George had to put behind her the defeat in the Junior Final and take on the highly talented Sally Hoang who had previous beaten West.  George was up to the task and was at her best never letting her opponent into the game winning 11-4 11-5 11-5 in an impressive victory.

Scarborough had only one representative  - Thomas Harrington - in the Boys events.  In the Cadet Boys he found himself in a particularly tough group but although he failed to qualify he took sets off all his opponents and played some fine table tennis. In the Cadet Boys event, after several hours wait to play,he had the misfortune to draw the number 1 seed in the 1st Round and went out in straight sets.

The Event was a major success for the Scarborough girls with two Event winners, a runner up and a semi finalist.     Gemma Deeley must build on her new game plan and look  win more matches at this level, Rebecca George can be well satisfied by winning her second 1* event this season an her overall performance during the day when the Junior Girls Final was the only match she lost, and Jessica West beat a number of highly ranked opponents during the day.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

TEAM EVENT  - REGIONAL FINALS, BLACKBURN.

It was a disappointing week end for Scarborough schools table tennis when four local team went out of the Team Event at the Regional Finals in Blackburn - one step from the National Finals.

Although it was appreciated that Scarborough 6th Form College would face strong opposition Gladstone Road Boys Under 11 and Graham Under 16 Girls and Under 13 Boys all had great chances - particularly the Girls who were strongly fancied to reach the Final.

Graham Girls had to play Bradford Grammar School and Dowdales, Dalton in Furness. They easily beat Bradford 8-2 with Rebecca George and Jessica West unbeaten and Alex Lee and Gemma Deeley taking a single each. As Dowdales also bet Bradford the Graham v Dowdales clash was the decider.  Graham started well with Rebecca George and Jessica West both taking their singles in straight sets to off set Gemma Dealey's three set defeat by the Dowdales no 1.   At this stage Graham were well ahead on sets so that a 4 all draw would be sufficient to see them through.
However the next two singles went to Dowdales. Rebecca George went down in four close set to the hard-hitting Dowdales no I and Alex Lee lost her opening singles in 3 hard fought sets.   Gemma Deeley picked her second singles easily but despite their best efforts Alex and Jessica could not win either of the final two singles.  Alex went to five sets and Jessica played well against the impressive Dowdales no 3 but Graham had to give best in a 5-3 defeat.
The only consolation to a disappointed Girls squad is that they are all young enough to compete in the competition next season - and they lost to a good team.

Graham Boys were involved in three close games. They drew their opening two games and lost the third 5-3.
Against Kings from Grantham they made a poor stat with Mark Frazer, Thomas Harrington and Conor Skelton losing their opening singles. However, two wins from Luke Jones and one each from Harrington and Skelton gave them the draw. Jones gave his team mates some anxious moments either coming from well behind to win or squandering big leads.
All the pressure was on Connor Skelton as not only had he to win the final singles but in straight sets.  This he did and on a count back the sets were level with Graham winning by one points on a count back on points !
In their second notch against Calday Grange from Merseyside  all the Graham players contributed a win in a real team effort. This time however the count back went against them by a single set.
Going into their final fixture Graham were still unbeaten and a win would probably have put them into the National Final.
However, the opponents no 1 and  2 proved different class and took their four singles with ease.  Wins from Luke Jones, Thomas Harrington and Conor Skelton brought the match score to 5-3 to Calday.
Graham could count themselves unfortunate to meet two top class players in the same team which proved decisive.
All the four players played well.  Mark Frazer made the best of a difficult job playing at no 1 and Conor Skelton won the vital final set in all three games.

Gladstone Road fielded a very young Under 11s team but found themselves competing in a Regional Final against a much lower standard of opponents then in recent seasons.
Much would depend on how Keegan Barstow and McCauley Youngson, ranked no I and 2 Under 11 in Yorkshire, fared.
In their opening singles they beat St Josephs, Keighley 5-3 with two wins from Keegan Barstow and one each from McCauley Youngson , Connor Thurston and Joseph Mann.  Their performance was workmanlike but they got the result they wanted.
In their second fixture against National School, Grantham their opponents had do concede two matches when one of their players was taken ill and was unable to play.  Gladstone Road made the most of their good fortune to win 5-3 with all the team members picking up a win.
All therefore depended on their final match against St Columba, Barrow in Furness.    However, the big guns did not fire for Gladstone Road with Barstow and Youngson only picking up one singles each leading to a 5-2 defeat.  Joseph Mann and Connor Thurston found it tough going although the latter was unfortunate to lose 14-12 in the decider in one of his singles.
As a team Gladstone Road performed with credit and all are young enough to compete next season - although it is doubtful that will find such weak opposition again.

As anticipated the 6th Form College squad of Harry Clapham, Adam Ciotowski, Luke Newman and Rhys Richings   found the Under 19 Boy Event to be of a high standard.
They were by no means disgraced in their opening math going don 5-3 to Kings, Grantham with two wins for Luke Newman and one for Harry Clapham. However in their second match they were outclassed 9-0 by Barrow 6th Form College.

Although no teams made it to the National Finals the Graham and Gladstone Road teams can add the runner up title of the Northern Region to that of North Yorkshire champions.

SCARBOROUGH CADETS SUCCESS IN NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE

Click on small pictures to enlarge

Scarborough Table Tennis Centre played host to the first ever National League fixtures played in Scarborough on February 12th with the Scarborough teams facing strong opposition from Rotherham and Sheffield.

The Scarborough Cadet A team of Rebecca George, Thomas Harrington and Callum Feather lost against Rotherham Scorpions A and then beat their B team.

Against Rotherham A Rebecca George played very well to take all her singles with a combination of good defending, backhand blocking and forehand attacking.
Callum Feather picked up one of his singles but made too many mistakes to be competitive in his other games. Thomas Harrington drew a blank despite being in a winning  position several times including losing one set 15- 13 in the decider.  This saw Scarborough go down 5-4.

Against Rotherham B Scarborough ran out 8-1 winners although the scoreline flattered the home team. Callum Feather played well mixing defence and a good counter attack behind his useful service. and Thomas Harrington came good to also remain unbeaten. All his wins were hard fought and he did well in the last of his singles to come back from being 8-5 down to win the deciding set 12-10.  Rebecca George's form dipped after her good performance in the first game. She was somewhat fortunate to win her second singles when she got an edge at deuce in the decider and then surprisingly lost out to the 9 year old Rotherham no 3 in her final singles.

The Scarborough B team of Alex Lee, Jessica West and Jennifer Wood won one and lost two of their three fixtures against Sheffield. They opened with a 5-4 defeat by Sheffield B with two wins each from Alex Lee and Jessica West. Jennifer Wood made a nervous start and did not register a win.  Jessica West had to play the highly ranked Sheffield no 1 in the final singles with the score at 4 all.  The game went into a fifth set and at 11 all her opponent mis hit a winning shot which proved decisive.

Against Sheffield D Scarborough just got home 5-4. Again Alex Lee and Jessica West won two of their singles and Jennifer Wood, playing more confident table tennis picked up a vital singles.  With the score level at 4 all play had to be stopped to allow Alex Lee to recover from a bout of sickness. She proved her toughness by returning to win in straight sets.

In their final match a rather tired Scarborough side went down 6-3 to Sheffield C with all the local players picking up one of their singles.

The results give both Scarborough teams a healthy position in the table in a very competitive National League. The wins for Alex Lee and Jessica West will put them into the England rankings.

GRANTHAM 1* Saturday November 13th   2006

This event saw some of Scarborough youngsters on top form.  In Cadet Singles Rebecca George won the final against number one seed Natasha Rees from Wales despite losing the first set.  Also in the Junior Girls Rebecca only loss of the day was against Holly Stubbings of Essex in the final.  Rebecca should certainly be pleased with her results.

Jessica west who lost in the semi final of the cadet girls to George made a very impressive debut at this level.

Both Jennifer Wood and her younger Sister Rhianna did extremely well in a tough competition.  Both girls played extremely well and look set to become stars in the future.

Thomas Harrington showed some good form to win tow of his three group matches in the Cadet Boys eventually losing to number 6 seed Scott Walton of Lincolnshire.  Thomas again had a good run in the under 13 boys playing some good attacking table tennis, but failed to win his next match despite an excellent performance. Keegan Barstow played very well in the under 13 event.  He won two of his group matches until finally bowing out to Alex George of Essex.

DISASTROUS START FOR SCARBOROUGH IN NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE IN MIDDLESBOROUGH

At the half way stage of the season the National Cadet League based in Middlesborough has been split into two Division according to the performances of the teams in the first half of the season. This has meant that Scarborough A ,who were only beaten once and were in second place in the table, and Scarborough B who were in fourth place were both in the A Division.

However, Scarborough As title hopes were dashed before they even left Scarborough.  No I David Revel declared himself unavailable and as the team was setting off from Scarborough James Hodgson was taken ill leaving the team with only two players.
Not surprisingly, the team lost all its four matches.  They went down 9-0 to Ormsbey with Conor Skelton taking his games to a fourth and fifth set but Stuart Chadwick trying hard but struggling at this level.  They then went down 7-2 to North Field A with Skelton picking up two his singles and only losing the third 11-9 in the decider.   In their third fixture they went down 5-4 to Northumbria with both playing picking up two singles.. To end a woeful day they then lose 7-2 to their B team.  Skelton beat Keegan Barstow in five sets including three sets which went to deuce. He then went down in straight set to Gemma Deeley and McCauley Youngson. Chadwick lost his singles but went close against Barstow

The B team found Ormsbey A too strong going down 9-0 although both Gemma Deeley and Keegan Barstow went close in several singles. In their other match they lost 7-2 to Northfield A  with Barstow and Youngson picking up a single each.

Regrettably the A teams hopes of honours have disappeared but the B team , which included two 9 year olds, have competed well at this level.

Disability Awareness Training Day

Click on small pictures to enlarge

The Scarborough Table Tennis Premier Club ran a Disability Awareness Training Day at the centre on Sunday 3rd April.  It was run by Judy Rogers ETTA disability and Equity awareness officer and Mark Palmer who is a one of the Great Britain Para Olympic table tennis team who went to the recent Athens Para Olympics as well as Sydney.  Mark is also the contact for BTTAD (British Table Tennis Association for Disabled People).

The day involved both workshops and activity training.  The workshops covered all disabilities including physical, visual, hearing and learning difficulties.  The Scarborough Table Tennis Centre is lucky in that it is a purpose built building which all forms of disabilities can use including wheel chairs.  Mark Palmer who has Cerebral Palsy and is mainly in a wheel chair demonstrated how a person who is in a wheel chair can play table tennis exceptionally well once trained.  Judy Rogers gave a very informative talk on how people with disabilities were now interested in table tennis as it is finally being understood that it can be open to most disable groups.

Table Tennis can be a very physical sport so it a great aid in either building up strength and eye and hand co-ordination as well in some cases a great aid to losing weight so not only good for disable player but also ladies who want to lose weight.  There was a game set up which is called Polybat which is aimed at players who find it difficult to pick up a normal bat but want to come and try table tennis.  Judy also informed the people present that public’s way of thinking had to change in the future.  It wasn’t the disabled people with the problems it was the able body who had the problems in the way that they dealt with disabled people.  She trained the members how to adapt table tennis to meet all needs.   In running this course for its members the Scarborough Table Tennis Centre is now passed by the ETTA to be a Disability Aware Premier Club.

ETTA has pledged to give the table tennis centre all the help it needs to encourage disabled both learning and physical difficulties so why not to come and give it a try either as a group, school or as an individual  all would be made welcome.  If you want more information or you want to come and give it a try (groups welcome) then please contact John Caton (development officer) on 01723360939

THE PRESIDENTS CUP FINAL

JOHN LOFTUS  & RICHARD LLOYD    2

ANDY GRAYSON & PAUL YOUNG     3

In the opening game John Loftus (+3) recorded a straight sets victory over Andy Grayson(+2) punishing his forehand loops and backhand chops with a series of side spin loops and backhand smash shots.
Game two saw Paul Young(Scratch) , the Top Six Tournament winner, record a straight sets victory over Richard LLoyd(+3), with an array of attacking all round smash and loop shots which his opponent found hard to deal with.
In the third game the Laundry pair, with Paul Young the star, won the doubles in four sets after the Nomads pair took a thrilling see-saw third set 15-13.
The fourth game was the game of the evening which ultimately decided the match. John Loftus threw away a 5-0 lead in each of the first three sets against Paul Young only to claw his way back into the third set saving three match points to win 15-13. In the fourth set Loftus again lost a five point lead but used all his experience with a varied series of backhand counter shots to save five match points and level the game in another thriller 19-17.  Young took the decider 11-8 using his loop shots to great effect but being pushed all the way by his opponent.
In the final singles Richard Lloyd recorded a four sets victory over Andy Grayson.

The star of the night was undoubtedly Paul Young who continued where he left off after winning the Top Six Tournament and the Closed Under 19s Individual title.  He used his all-round skills to maximum effect to defeat his opponents. Praise must also go to John Loftus for his fighting spirit and the way in which he fought his way back into the game against Young and narrowly losing the decider.

Report from Richard LLoyd.

The Scarborough Senior and Junior Closed Championships that took place at the Scarborough Table Tennis Centre at the weekend attracted one of the largest entries in recent years.

In the Men's Close Singles, the holder Martin Lowe had little difficulty in adding the Scarborough title to the York title he recently won.  In the Final he proved far too strong for veteran Dave Burnham  taking the title in straight sets  11-8  11-2  11-9.  Burham kept in the match by catching Lowe with his fast service but there was only ever to be one winner. Beaten semi finalists were Gary Connolly and Mark Marshall.  The Consolation Plate was won by Jon Mancrief who beat Adam Ciotowski 11-8  11-9  11-7.
The holders Lowe and Mark Marshall held onto their Doubles title beating Mike Fenby and Gerald Smith 11-5  11-9  11-7.  Beaten semi finalists were Peter Lee and Derek Elliott and Andy Grayson and Paul Young.

The Women's Closed Singles suffered by the late withdrawal of no I seed Karen Worley which opened up a route to the Final for team mate Laura Daniel where she met previous winner Zoë Feather back playing in the League this season. Feather proved soon strong winning 11-5 11-9  11-9. Beaten semi finalists were Amanda Lee and Rebecca George.

YORKSHIRE JUNIOR LEAGUE

Scarborough's Junior and Cadet  teams played their final fixtures of the season in the Yorkshire League at Hull at the weekend.

The Junior A team won one and lost one on the day. In their opening fixtures they went down to a strong Doncaster side 7-2 with wins from Alex Barker and Adam Ciotowski.
Doncaster included Damien Piper who had been competing in the English Junior Championships  the previous day.  They then got home 5-4 against Halifax with wins from Barker, Citowksi and Harry Clapham.
The Junior B team played 3 fixtures.  In their opening fixtures they went down to York 7-2 which included two wins form Ben Kay including a fine win over highly ranked Stephen Parker.   They then beat Hull 5-4 with two wins each from Kay, Dan Machon how showed some of this old form, and one from Luke Newman.  In their final fixture they threw away a chance to go out on a winning noted by losing 5-4 to Halifax with two wins each from Kay and Newman.
There were a number of good individual performances from the juniors but the fact  remains that only Ben Kay puts in the time at the practice table at the Scarborough Centre which is essential to compete at this level.

The Cadet teams suffered from the unavailability of many player which necessitated the shuffling of players and some beginners being given the opportunity to play at County level.
Inevitable the teams results suffered. The A team however won both its games beating the Scarborough C team and  then beating Hull 5-4 with Ben Kay unbeaten and Rebecca George and Thomas Harrington winning one apiece.
The B team went down to both Halifax and Pontefract with the only winners being James Hodgson and Conor Skelton.     The C team  fielded the inexperienced Keegan Barstow and Jennifer and Rhianna Wood who gave of their best with Barstow taking one of his singles.
Highlight for Scarborough was Ben Riming outstanding form  - he has lost only  two games in the Cadet Division this season - as wll as performing well for the Juniors.

MONDAYS AT THE CENTRE IN MARCH

From Monday March 7th Mondays at the Centre will be set aside for the rest of the month for practice for players who have either put themselves forward for the forthcoming coaching course or who volunteered to help support the juniors players.

The Centre will be open from 7pm for the senior and junior players. It will not be an evening of organised coaching - it will simply give the seniors a chance to play with the juniors who come along.  Obviously it is hoped that the seniors will take the opportunity to give advice to the juniors although seniors will get the chance to play with each other.

There will be no charge to senior players on the understanding that their main task is the support of the juniors.  Junior players will pay £1.

The evening will not be  organised and the plan will be for players to move from table
to table so that they can play with a mixture of opponents.

If the Mondays in March prove to be a success the scheme can be extended month by month to the Summer holidays.

Juniors may attend by invitation only. Catch me at the Centre if you did not get an invite and you think you deserve one !

ENGLISH SCHOOLS TABLE TENNIS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The four Scarborough schools representing North Yorkshire in the Regional Finals of the English Schools Team Championships in Blackburn at the week end all lost out on a place in the National Finals.

Graham School Under 13 Girls team just missed out on making the Finals when they clashed with powerful opponents Oakbank Sports College, Tulketh Sports College and Kesteven School.   Previously Graham had missed out on an easy route to the Finals when they drew with North Field school in Middlesborough and lost on a count back - only to see Northfield easily make it to the Finals in another group.  Graham had little trouble in despatching Tulketh 7-1 with Rebecca George, Gemma Deeley and Alex Lee all unbeaten and a single from Nichole Brown.  Kesteven proved stronger opponents but again Graham won 7-1 with the same winners although many of the sets went to five and the score line flattered Graham. Against Oakbank it was always going to be difficult as their no I was Mary Fuller who is ranked no 2 in England.  In the opening singles Gemma Deeley took the first set against Fuller but eventual went down 3-1. However Rebecca George and Alex Lee played excellent table tennis to give Graham a 2-1 lead.  A fine win from Gemma Deeley saw Rebecca George take on Mary Fuller and at two set all the match could have gone anyway but Fuller proved just the stronger to take the decider.
At 3 sets all Alex Lee had to beat the Oakbank no 2 as Nichole Brown was faced with a difficult task in the final singles.  A draw would have seen a count back on sets which would have been favourable to Graham. In yet another tense match Alex played to the top of her form and the match went to a fifth set and them to 10 all.  Sadly, Alex then lost 12.1O and Graham were out of the competition after putting up a great fight.

The other girls teams saw Gladstone Road Girls Under 11s take on Bradford Girls Grammar School and Cliffedale school, Lincolnshire.  The Scarborough school fielded a young team and the inexperienced girls  went down to older and stronger opponents.
Jessica West and Jennifer Wood picked up wins for Gladstone Road.

The Scarborough 6th  Form College Under 19s team of  Harry Clapham, Adam Ciotowksi, Chris Daniel and Rhys Riching found that playing once a week in the local League was not sufficient to cope with their strong opponents. Although not outclassed they went down 6-2 to Calday Grange Grammar School, Merseyside with wins from Harry Clapham and Adam Ciotowski and 7-1 to King Edward VII school, S.Yorks with Ciotowski their only winner.

Gladstone Under II Boys also found the competition too hot but put on a bold show and were not far behind the winners. They started slowly against the eventual winners Cliffdale Primary from Lincolnshire with the players showing signs of nerves.  They lost the opening 6 games - although one of these was a defeat for  Luke Machon who lost at deuce in the fifth set. However, there were then wins for  Joseph Ryan and Danny Vasey to make the score line 6-2 although it  could have been a good deal closer.  Gladstone Road then went down 5-3 to  Brimington Junior School, Derbyshire with wins from Luke Machon, Joseph Ryan and Danny Malton.  Again games were lost in the deciding set to rule out any hope of a draw or even victory.    It all came good in their final game when they beat Neville Road school, Greater Manchester 6-2 with Luke Machon unbeaten.
All the Gladstone Road players had wins to their name and tried hard. With a bit more self belief they might  have even  made the Finals.

YORKSHIRE JUNIOR LEAGUE TABLE TENNIS

Scarborough teams had a disappointing time in Halifax during the opening series of fixtures for the Cadets in the Yorkshire League.
Scarborough are fielding six Cadet teams in the County League this season with three in the A Division and 3 in the B Division.   The A team had an easy win over their B side but then suffered defeats against Halifax and Castlewood/Pontefract.
Halifax were strong favourites to win the league but Scarborough set up a 3-1 lead in their clash with two wins from Ben Kay and one from Rebecca George , but then lost the next five singles to go 6-3 down.
Kay played well in the opening two singles but failed to maintain his form in his final singles.   Rebecca George was never able to get into the game in her last two singles, while Jan Dyl could count himself unfortunate to finish without a win especially as he lost his final singles 11-9 in the fifth set.
Scarborough were hoping of taking the runner up spot but then lost 6-3 to Castle/Pontefract with Kay picking up two singles and Dyl the other.
Ben Kay played top level table tennis at the start of the day but was unable to maintain his form, Rebecca George did as well as could be expected as the only girl competing in the top division and Dyl deserved more than his solitary victory.
The Scarborough B and C teams also competed in the A Division and so had to meet the first team of other towns.  After going down to the A team when Thomas Harrington excelled by taking both Kay and George to a deciding set the B team beat the C team 8-2 with David Revell unbeaten but then went down to Hull 6-3 with two wins from Harrington,
The C team struggled against Halifax but put up a good performance when going down to Hull 6-3 with wins from Callum Feather, Conor Skelton and James Hodgson.  Highlight of their defeat by the B team was two wins for Feather.
The B and C team players were all competing against older and more experienced players but were far from disgraced and both Harrington and Feather showed that they will soon make strong A team players.
The next fixtures for the Scarborough D, E and F teams are in Halifax on December 5th and the A, B and C team will next be in action in Scarborough on January 30th

YORKSHIRE COUNTY TABLE TENNIS RANKING TRIALS
HALIFAX  October 16th and 17th

Scarborough's junior table tennis players returned from the Ranking Trials in Halifax at the weekend with some excellent rankings following some fine performances.

The Saturday was confined to 48 Cadet Boys were took part by invitation only so the standard was very high.  The player were split into 8 groups of 6 with the bottom player in each group being eliminated to reduce the trial to 40 players.  This saw the eliminated of James Hodgson and Mark Frazer.  James was inconsistent in his play but Mark could count himself unlucky to be eliminated. He lost his final three singles at deuce in the deciding set ! If these games had gone his way he would have been guaranteed a reasonable ranking.  On the other hand Thomas Harrington picked up just one win in his opening group but it was sufficient to see him into the bottom section of the 40 players. He then proceeded to win his next five games for a very fine 33rd place. Both Thomas and Mark showed great potential for the future as they have several years in which to improve their ranking.     The more experience pair of Jan Dyll and David Revel both qualified from their group and picked up highly commendable rankings of 24 and 32 respectively.   Scarborough's top cadet Ben Kay only dropped one of his games in his group but struggled after that but still managed an excellent ranking of 10 despite never hitting top form.

It was the turn of the Junior Boys (Under 17) and Cadet Girls on the Sunday.   Alex Barker and Danny Machon were the Scarborough Junior Boys representatives. Alex found himself in a  relatively easy group but Danny was placed with a number of highly ranked players. Alex did exceedingly well to finish second in his group but Danny struggled with one  single win to his name.   Alex continued to play to the top of his form and finished a highly creditable no 6 which is the highest ranked junior that Scarborough has enjoyed for some years.  Danny in the end had to be content with a ranking of 27.  Both players rankings were affected by their opening groups but whilst Alex deserves great credit for his high ranking Danny will have to work hard to justify his undoubted potential.

The Cadet Girls event was by no means as competitive as the Boys events with only 12 girls taking part.   Scarborough no I Rebecca George found herself in the easier of the two group apart from  May Fuller who  is ranked no 7 in England at Under 13 level and has just retuned from a training camp in Hungary.  The clash between these two players nearly caused a major upset as the match stood at 2 sets all with the deciding set evenly balanced.   The England ranked girl found all sort of problems  with the Scarborough girls short service and left hand attack and only just scraped through 11-7.
The stronger of the two groups saw Gemma Deeley and Alex Lee taking part.   Gemma put her indifferent local league form behind her to win her opening  two games with Alex losing her first two games. When the Scarborough pair clashed it should have been a formality but Alex did not see it that way and beat Gemma in five. sets.  Gemma made partial amends  by beating a strong opponent who had beaten Alex and the Scarborough girls finished with Rebecca ranked 3 equal, Alex  ranked 5th and Gemma ranked 6th.
These performances meant that all three Scarborough girls qualify for the Regional Trials next month and are only on step away from the National Ranking trials at the Crystal Palace.  Congratulations to all three girls who worked hard for this success.
